He likes to do yard work and wood work and likes to work on vehicles. He likes to buy things himself since half the time he doesn't like what I get him or feels guilty that I spent money on him.

Well a 50th birthday is the biggest one of your life. It is both exciting and very depressing. After you give him the 10 year membership in AARP. also give him something that makes him feel young again. Do some sort of funny thing like "over the hill, but I love you still" thing.. Maybe make a special card for him. They are easy to do. And a gift certificate to a good store that has the best woodworking stuff would probably be nice. Does he like to read? There are some good woodworking magazines
Maybe a day at a car show, if he likes that. Whatever you do this must be the best birthday of his life. Make sure his kids and others remember too.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/GuideToWoodworking
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

You could go the route of getting him a gift card or something like that, or you could maybe just plan a wonderful weekend away together (doesn't have to be expensive)...maybe a nice dinner, and a night in a hotel where you can show him out much you love him!

If you really want to impress your husband and show him your love MAKE him something for his birthday. Maybe crochet a blanket or something with his name on it and I think it will show that you love him very much because you took the time to go through all that. It will be better than a store bought gift because YOU made it. If he doesn't appreciate that, then somethings wrong.

Go, check out a local antique store. Get him something that will remind him of his childhood. That's what I do for the person that has everything. you don't have to spend much either.
