Good standing has nothing to do with behavior in an educational setting. It simply means you have a GPA that is above the required level to be considered 'not failing' by the institution and you are eligible to continue taking courses and receiving financial aid. The only time they might say 'not in good standing' if your grades are okay is if you have tuition that is past due or in default on any existing student loans.

The person makes good grades and has never been a problem for the univ.An average student. They could have said excellent grades but behavior issues or ave. student with excellent extra-curricular activities/leadership qualitiies to discribe the student. Or low grades and no special standing with univ. would mean the student is not noticed for anything.

To be in good standing with someone means to be well thought of, therefore the university thinks well/highly of this person.
