Magnificent idea. You should be a senator. Welfare people should be housed in group homes similar to prisons. Being on welfare should be as unpleasent as possible, with your activities under a 24 hour surveillence. No having pizza delievered on the first of every month with MY tax money, and then not tipping the guy who is 1,000 times better than you as a human being because at least he has a job.

What if one day they get off welfare and wanted babies?? Have seen in the kind of work I do, a lot of women who you would wonder if they were not breeding for welfare money not only that but all the kids all had Medical problems and were on disability and recieving monthly checks and most of the kids are still being raised by poor grandma who should be living a normal life but can't because mom is not around yet mom is getting the monthly checks.

No. Sterilization sends the message that they are a class of people that shouldn't be allowed to reproduce. What happens if the get straightened out and financially stable? Then you have taken away the right for people to have their own chldren. Even so, what dictates that an impoverished child is less important or wonderful than a rich child? When you start to go down that path, your open up other cases...like this group shouldn't be alowed to have children because of these reasons. Hitler wanted to sterilize Jews during the Holocaust. I don't think that we should institutionalize the idea that some people aren't worth as much as other people by taking away their rights. What a huge step backwards for human rights.

They don't get pregnant by themselves you know! Although I do agree people on welfare should be on mandatory birth control of some kind. Sterilization is a bit extreme I think.

I'm thinking there are poor women who have babies because they don't have money to prevent it and sex is one of their ill chosen recreations...only one they can afford...or have any time for....
Sterilization could be a good idea though, if only it didn't involve so much other possibilities for tabs the government would have to pick up. Sorry to burst your bubble....

How about we just eat the babies we don't want to pay for?
Please, your suggestion violates too many rights and sensibilities to list. The first being the right to procreate and plan a family guarunteed by the U.S. Consitution. Of course the system suffers from abuse from a few, but there is a better way to stop the behavior: education. Until everyone is allowed equal access to a decent education, we will have extra mouths to feed.

No, it's NOT a good idea. Unless you live in a communist dictatorship like China.
Although some people take advantage of the system, think about the freedom of choice you'd be getting rid of in general. Values of freedom are more important than a few people abusing the system!

They should make cable television illegal for those on welfare. The city should hire the welfare people to clean up vacant lots, paint fences, etc. If they are not physically capable of that, they should be paid to help disabled people (like blind people)
