i am looking for a word to sum up our wanting. not materialism because it is only of material things(e.g. car, handbag) i am looking for a word that relates wanting job positions, power, and such things.

also if you have any thoughts on the matter of 'wanting' it'd be greatly appreciated since i am working on a speech.

1. Drive
2. Desire
3. Yearning

My creative juices aren't flowing very well tonight. :( I can only think of those three words that, to me, equate to "wanting" in the way you describe.

Good luck on your speech.

I have a master's degree in marketing and it sounds like you are describing needs and wants in a general sense. The absence of a job that is needed, power that is wanted, etc., would be described as an unfulfilled need, in marketing terms. Therefore, my best guess is that the concept you are aiming for is "fulfillment."

It's a bit cumbersome but try 'desirousness'. A strong desire for things, whether they be material or otherwise, is what keeps the human race evolving.(My opinion).
If we don't strive to obtain what we desire(want) then we atrophy and die.
Even before we can 'think', we can desire. A baby desires, warmth, food and comfort long before it can define these things.
In my opinion, desire is a much more encompassing word than want.Desire is softer and more nebulous....want is harsh and cold .
Go for your Heart's Desire and you'll 'want' for nothing !

Craving, which means wanting something too much. It also means wanting something so much that you experience your wanting with needing; that you think you need something you actually only want.
