It's to punish themselves for something they feel is their fault, as in creating a problem, hurting someone. Cutting is a release of pain and a reminder that they are alive. Strange but that's how my friend explained it to me.

Guess what, not just emo people cut! I've seen many a football player, and even cheerleaders, actually people from all kinds of different groups with oddly straight rows of scratches on their arms. Shocking, yes. Often its probably for attention, especially if "everyone is doing it" in their group of friends, then sometimes it is pretty serious. Isn't it odd what we do to 'express ourselves'?

Emo's are emo because they like to copy what they see. Parrots of punks, really. Cutting one's self is an emotional need to punish one's self for doing something or being something they do not wish to have or be.

Most of them do it to be part of the trend, so they "accidentally" show the tiny shallow scars they make
Others cut because they are ****** in the head and don't know any better.
Just remember that emo people are losers and are conforming to a trend. Just because they wear alternative clothes doesn't mean they are "different"... they are just sell out fags.

Because they think that people that see the cuts will think they're all depressed and emotional and all that emo stuff when really we just see them for the self-indulgent posers that they are.

They have have problems and dont really know the best way to handle them or there under alot of stress and pressure so
They cut Because it's there way of controlling their own pain

Stop categorizing....they don't all do that...in fact I doubt many do. Not all hippies did drugs or had multiple sexual partners.
