I've read a little bit about both professions. The road to becoming a doctor seems really difficult.

That's why I'm thinking about nursing instead.

I've heard that nurses come in contact more with the patients than doctors so is that true?

Is there anybody out there willing to share some experience about being a doctor or nurse.

Thanks.

I'll give you a very honest answer.

I went to medical school. All four years and got an M.D. I hated every second of it with my entire heart, mind and soul. So much so, that after med school, I went straight into a M.B.A. program and have never worked in health care again.

Alleluia!!!

There is not a darn thing enjoyable about it and residency is much worse. I don't care what anyone tells you, the reason why doctors exist is because they are paid well. No one would do it for $50,000 or $75,000 / year. They deseve the money they make. I don't know anyone that went into it solely for the money, but by the time you are finished you are damn well going to make sure you are well compensated.

I'm not trying to scare you, but you should know how some people really feel. I was not the only one that regretted going, but I was the only one that got out. I was not trapped with $80,000+ in debt. I know people now who don't really enjoy it, but they are totally invested in it and can't just stop and do something else. Plus they have grown accustomed to the lifestyle.

Between my first and second year, I did a month long "internship" at a family practice office. The first time I met the doctor I would be following, the first thing he said was, "Are you sure you want to do this?" When I met his partner, the first thing he said to me was, "It's not too late to get out."

It was not the difficult part that bothered me. I ended up doing fairly well. I just had no desire to ever walk into another room and see another patient again as long as I lived. I wanted nothing to do with health care by the time I finished.

Yes, some people do like it. I have no idea why.

I've got a hell of a lot of respect for those hard working.caring nurse's. Doctors I find are mostly in it for the money. Also a good nurse sometimes is more in touch with their patients than a doctor. Its up to you to decide. Good luck. Both are honorable professions.

Having a nursing degree can be a good pre-med...u can be admitted to medical school, just by adding some subjects like calculus, physics and higher chem, i think... being a nurse has its rewards but if u really want to be a doctor..u should go for it

you should do the one you have more passion for, no matter how hard it is to get there. and it depends on the type of doctor you want to be, there might be some that don't really require them to see their patients as much. but the little kids doctor (i forgot what they are called) they need to make contact constantly. I know mine always did.

Hey, I worked in a Med-Surge Hospital for ten yrs and a Nursing Home for nine yrs. Most Dr's think they are hot crap. You are suppose to know what they are thinking and how to read their scribble. They need to speak clearer and write more legible.

there's a real need for both/either.
from what I know the schooling for a doctor is very expensive.
nurses are paid well but are pushed to their limits and wear out early, so if you enjoy this field, also plan for what happens when you burn out, what steps or field you will go into next.
