Largest quarterly profit EVER by a company....two quarters in a row!

*********
The announcement was just made this morning that it's now 3 quarters in a row that Exxon has the largest quarterly profit. Just one more quarter and they will have the highest YEARLY profit of any company ever......And GUESS who they will be beating out??? Why, themselves, of course. Exxon had the highest yearly profit EVER for a US company in 05!

There's nothing wrong with a profit, but THIS is ridiculous!

Are you sure Why and not How?

Well, we live in a capitalistic country, we aren't a Communist country, nor do we have a King who can make decisions like this for us.
Gas is only one commodity. Food prices, clothing prices, utility prices, all of these things could be substituted for gas.

You must have a liberal teacher, am I right?

I would love to pay only one buck a gallon for gas, it would let me save more money for my kids education, or I could use that money to pay off my mortgage faster, etc etc.
But, I don't think they "should" be lowered. I wish people drove a little less, stopped driving gas guzzlers, than the demand would be lower, thus the prices.
But just to say why they "should" be lowered, to me is an idealistic non real world propostion.
Hell, the rents on the south side of Chicago and in New York should be lower, where does it stop?
To make it happen again, we need to do three things, and gas prices will be lower, or not go as high, and those three things are:
Conserve Conserve Conserve!
ps. My son is only six, if he has a teacher that gave him a paper with such a nonsensical proposition, I would have a long sit down with that teacher, and I would be thinking, PRIVATE SCHOOL!

The real question is should gas prices be lower? If you are from a region where oil production is the major form of employment you will remember the 1990's as a very hard time for you and your friends. High oil prices encourage conservation. They also encourage research into alternative fuels. Higher profits also make it profitable for Americans to produce more of their own oil as our labor costs are much higher and many of our reserves are harder to access because of depth and technology need to extract as compared to the persian gulf. In short High gas prices actually benefits millions of American workers if you don't believe me ask people from texas, wyoming, newmexico, alaska, etc. etc. As for insane profits if you where in business you would know total profits are less of an indicator of viability than profit percectages. Most oil companies operate at 7% which is far less than most any other industries, these numbers have been stable. The average industry needs around 20-40 % to remain viable. Also remember OPEC sets pricing more than anyone. You may like to think American companies had some say in what they do but in reality these guys are the definition of self serving. My last point would be that if you ever traveled even to Canada where a lot of oil is produced you will find US oil companies provide fuel to us at a very cheap price compared to the rest of the world. My wife is Canadian. Every time her friends and family visit they comment on how cheap gas is here and are mad because they know Canada supplies a huge percentage of our oil. Also although I am originally from New Mexico I moved here to Hawaii while things were bad in the oilfields and all employment was effected. we have much higher gas than the mainland and it is still cheaper than Canada. If you where to lower prices look at the taxes most places it can be close to a third of the price.

You cant force down the price of gas, or say "it should be lower" We can talk about the benefits of cheaper gas, but that is different. If you use price controls to make the price lower than demand will out weight demand and there will be oil shortages.

I can give you a few areas where cheaper gas will help.
1) lower energy costs (heat and A/C)
2) less transportation costs for goods, should mean cheaper goods on the shelf
3) cheaper transportation costs for consumers, (airline tickets, gas, trains)

I am not sure on your question. Gas is a derivitive of oil and when oil prices fluctuate, gas prices do.

The gas prices flew up during the hurricanes last year. They flew up again this spring when MTBE was removed from it and replaced with ethanol. The problem was there was not enough ethanol to fill the demand.

If you put price caps, you will cause supply to be short. They never work. Ask if you want to me to clarify.

How does someone lower gas prices?
Gas is made from light sweet crude which is sold at the Chicago exchange to highest bidder of which there are over 1000 refineries and oil companies bidding for each barrel of oil, so please explain how you think some-one person can lower the overall price of gas.

important reasons:

1) ppl may have jobs that r far away frm their house so they use up alot of gasoline so they use $ 2 pay 4 it so they have 2 give up their cabel tv, cell phone etc. etc. bc they can't afford it!

2) ppl have children and they need 2 buy them food. clothes, etc. etc. and is diffulcult 2 do that bc they got 2 work and got 2 pay gasoline and can't afford $ for their children's utilities!!!!!!!

3) ppl have 2 go places and going 2 the gas station every day or week just wastes their time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good luck with ur essay! ;-)

1. Auto industry can't sell cars
2. U.S is looking at alternate fuels, like E85, if they go this way, all
we need is 15% of crude, 85% corn, ethanol. Good for our farmers, good for our environment, just all good. We need to do this like yesterday.
3. Politicians want you to think of them around election day, that things are not too bad..... wait till after, bend over.
