to sustain a decent quality of life....

Maslow categorized into 5 levels of needs: physiological (food, water, etc for sustenance), safety, love and relationship, status (self esteem) and finally self-actualization. See reference below.

While that provided a framework, different people have their varied idea of what decent quality is, especially when it comes to that 'status' part. You can probably tell from the other answers what most people think are the basic needs. You'll have to ask yourself what would constitute decent quality of life at the level of 'status'. Have fun.

How about this:

(1) Sustenance: meaning both food and money

(2) Shelter: provides privacy and protects money from taxation and dwellers from danger

(3) Sex: alone or shared

(4) Some-purpose: for the quality of being

(5) Someone: that has all the above and still wants to share it with you

If you want a lame answer then i guess it would be: food, water, shelter, etc.

But if you want a more interesting answer, I would say that it would be:

knowledge - because a man who knows more, understands more

love - because it makes life worth living

faith - because believing in something bigger than yourself puts things in perspective

art or beauty - because to be honest, life would be dull without it

a sense of humor - because the world and life itself would seem like such a horrible thing if you take it too seriously

Nutrition and vitamins (such as healthy foods and a daily vitamin to keep your immune system running strong and healthy.)

Hydration (such as water or Gatorade so that you have enough liquids in your system to sweat out when you exercise efficiently.)

Daily exercise (such as cardie to keep your heart and body healthy and to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure and keep your body running at it's best.)

Comradeship (you have to have friends so that you won't become sequestered from the outside world which could lead to low self-esteem or depression, plus friends help you through some tough dilemmas.)
