It varies dramatically by state, there is no average. Idaho pays about 3.20 per hour plus tips, Washington pays something like 6.50 per hour because they mandate a full minimum wage for any employee, and New York is Half of Federal minimum wage, or approx. 2.65 per hour.

Additional Information:
A tipped employee my not make any less than half the federal minimum wage. Its called a Tip Credit to the employer. Any claims that the going rate is less than half of 5.15 per hour is inaccurate.

I worked at Red Lobster in South Carolina and was paid 2.13 an hour. However, we also got a tip credit on our checks that always put us at minimum wage- 5.15. So basically, I made 2.13 an hour regardless, but was ALWAYS taxed on 5.15. Most days , we came out ahead, but some days I was taxed on money I didn't receive. I think that it had something to do with how we file for taxes or something like that. We were also supposed to put into the computer if we made more than minimum wage, but I don't think many people do that!

In Iowa I paid my staff $3.09 an hour. But they got to keep all their tips. There's this wacky law that if the business doesn't gross over $xxxxxx a year, then your exempt from minimum wage and only have to pay a percentage of it.

Here in CA servers get about $7-8 an hour but have to pool tips.

Minimum wage varies, but if you get a portion of tips, then some places will pay as little as $2-$3 per hour. Here's a link to minimum wage by state:

It all depends on the area. In my area min wage is 5.15 but cost of living is cheap where I live. I live about 60 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth TX.

minimun is $6.50, we pay our servers $3.90, but I know our corporate stores only pay $2.50. I guess it depends on the area of the country you live and the cost of living there.
