North Korea has only convenience allies. Even the communist nations do not feel that North Korea is really friendly to them. North Korea's closest "ally" is China. China is in a difficult position. Firstly, they don't want the agenda of the United States to prevail so close to home; they are content with a roguish neighbor. China is also uncomfortable with the possibility of destabilizing the North Korean regime, which might ultimately lead to a collapse, and untoward political instability.

China and Russia are North Korea's biggest allies, both providing food and energy to the country. This is why much of the 6 party talks relies on China to use their leverage in order to manipulate North Korea.
