See the BabyCentre website below...
My baby has a very strong gag reflex (because of a slightly restricted esophagus - a condition that she was born with that should go away over the first 6-18 months.) When we introduced fruits and veggies at 7 months we had to water them down a bit and also needed to start giving her water in a bottle with her meals to help her wash things down a bit. Otherwise we wouldn't have even given her water then as she's breastfed and doesn't really need it.
Supplementing with water can make your baby take less milk.

It is possible that what your baby has is thrush. Try using a damp rag to clean his mouth after every feeding. No soap though just a warm damp cloth. If this does not seem to help then be sure to call your doctor again and let them know. They can prescribe a medicine to help it. Congrats on the new baby and good luck.

Make sure he doesn't have thrush. It's a yeast infection in the mouth that can make the tongue white. If not, use a warm facecloth to wash the inside of his mouth. Water is not recommended at this age.

It is recommended that new babies not have anything but formula, but if there is build up, i was told that i could give a 4 ounce bottle of filtered water. Tap water isn't recommened. I always bought the nursery water that wal-mart carries.

You can give the baby a little water but also you can just take a burp rag and wipe off the tongue. I know it sounds gross but it works and then you can give him just a little bit of water not even half an once though just s few swallows

You should take your baby to a doctor for any irregular signs. Also, make sure that you use free diapers and wipes with Aloe Vera and Vitamin E to make your baby feel a little more comfortable. You can also check out this site http://www.upkb.com/diapers.php for the product details.

it's probably not a good idea to give him water if the doctor says not to. better to wait. your baby needs all the nutrients it can get out of milk at this time.

You can give nursery water or distilled water- as long as it has been purified. Don't give tap water. And not too much water- just enough to clean out his mouth. You could get a wash cloth damp and let baby suck it and that will help get the nasties out without making him sick.
