He was mourning the loss of his wife and went into the wilds to hunt and whatnot. He became head of the Rough Riders and led his men into battle in the Spanish America War...he was well covered in the media by the likes of Stephen Crane and Mark Twain who were both war correspondents at that time. I thought he may have been Governor of NY but I do believe that I was thinking of Franklin.
