Ok, so I purchased a 2001 Audi TT Quattro last night from a private seller and today after driving it for a few miles the clutch froze up and wouldn't go into any gear. As a side note last week my mechanic looked the car over throughly and this wasn't an issue. I called my mechanic as I was waving cars around me and he told me to turn the car off, place the car in gear and then start it but to be careful because it would take off on me.
It worked just as he said it would and I limped home without being able to stop other wise the car would die. Now I know a fair bit about classic automobiles but I've never had a car this new. Based on what I've read on the net it sounds like the hydraulics on my clutch went out but what does that mean to me? Is the clutch gone? Maybe out of fluid? What are the best/worse case senarios? Can this thing just happen all of a sudden or is it likely that the guy I bought it from had a good idea that this was an issue. Thanks for your help!!

Fluid leak most likely. If you're REALLY unlucky it could be a busted diaphragm spring in the clutch. Other possibles are a failed master or slave cylinder or a broken clutch actuator arm.

If it's a leak, your mechanic probably should have noticed it if he looked at it properly. Did he put it up on the lift and have a good close look around?

Clutch is probably OK. Sounds like a slave or master cylinder issues. Have you tried filling the resv. with hydraulic fluid yet? This problem could have just cropped up out of nowhere, meaning your mechanic could not have predicted this was an issue before you purchased the car. Like all high-strung european vehicles you either learn to live with this sort of thing or sell it and buy a Camry.
By the way...have you ever thought about the fact you are driving around in a car named TT? Sounds kinda nasty.....

Driving in rush hour brings out the best in me. I become one with my car and and we cut in and out of the lanes. We are especially cruel to little old lady drivers and old men driving old cars because they drive slowly and timidly.
