A very good movie.

The environment itself lent to some of the character's problems. Billy killing himself after being helped to feel so ashamed for an essentially very human act. The little guy (forget his name) who couldn't get the cigarette bet correct ultimately going into outburst because he felt no one respected what he had to say. And the "chief" (as he was referred to in the film) taking his friend's life out of the ultimate empathy.
I'd say most of the character's of course had a diagnosable disorder upon their admittance. (And perhaps a few did not. Society can tend to lock away those it finds undesirable for a host of reasons.)

Quite a weighty topic to write a paper on. Good luck with it.

It's hard to narrow it down to one! Billy Bibbit certainly seems to have a lot of anxiety... Harding seems quite anxious as well (the fluttering of the hands?) and if McMurphy IS NOT just tweaking the system to avoid jail, then he could have a personality disorder (sociopathic?) - but of course we are meant to think that he's just faking.

You should read the book and then come to your own conclusion-the movie is based on Ken Kesey's novel. In my opinion, Scanlon exhibited the most acute anxiety levels; his obsession with bombs and destruction and he was there by force. Don't know if this would help you in your decision, just my thoughts.

All of them except Nicholson's character and the Nurses. I don't think Ratchet had any mental illness, she was just a bi***.

I'd pick Nurse Ratchet if I were you. She's a bit of a sociopathic control freak, wouldn't you say?
