Rap's emergence onto the American music scene is similar to that of punk music. They both came about because the music of the late seventies lacked enough power to get America's youth excited about anything. They both were part of a counterculture. The only difference is that rap has continued to grow into a viable artform and punk is a footnote in our musical history.

The messages in rap songs vary from songs about parties, the neighborhoods and being youg, to the violence and sexual bravado that characterize much of what people hate about rap.

You can't just judge the artists without listening to them. Even if the songs are about violence, what is being said in the song? Is it a cautionary tale, or a shameless made up story? There are artists who have good messages. You just have to dig deep and search.

Rap isn't what is affecting the community. The problem is that parents aren't affecting the community enough. Who's looking over the kids? Who is running the after school programs? Who is coaching the sports teams? If kids are encouraged to good, their passions will be ignited and their focus can lead them past the bad influences you are worried about.

People need to listen to music, watch TV and watch movies with their kids and discuss what is being said, what they like about it, and what could make the music, show or film better. By analyzing, they will become more selective and can filter out the garbage that you don't want them exposed to. We need to teach our kids to think so they can make the right decisions when we are not around.

I'd be lying if I said most rap had a positive affect, and personally I feel a lot does have a negative affect. However, that other person has a good point, there's much bigger issues out there to be solved and it's pretty much a waste of time for people to want to blame music or rap.

It's not affecting it in a bad way at all, what makes it bad is when people like you just look for the negative qualities in things like this and really turn it into something big. A lot of people don't like rap because they rap about bad things, well that's really just because that's whats going on in their lives and you better deal with it cause its not like they can turn off everything in their life and all of a sudden live a perfect one.

Hmm, rap does set a poor example, but the effect of rap on "our community" is next to nil compared to the awful parenting out there. Music reflects our society more than it influences it.
