How many do you want? Just to name a few, Queen, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Kinks, The Who, The Rolling Stones. I wouldn't really say very many recently because, quite frankly, they haven't impacted our lives significantly.

The time frame must be in the 19th Century? Ok in that century the most rockin' star was Franz Liszt. He started it all. He was the very first pop star. You probably have never heard of him, but he was really big in his day. They made a movie about him called Lisztomania, starring a 20th Century European pop star from the Who, singer Roger Daltrey. It also had the keyboard player from the 20th century European Progressive Rock band called Yes as a cameo role. The movie was somewhat a flop.
Wait a minute... Maybe you are talking about the 20th Century.
Ahh... It all started with the Beatles, the Blues underground scene, and the Skiffle scene. Yeah, the Beatles were the first ones to break the scene in the U.S. Then after that were the Rolling Stones, then the Who, the Yardbirds, The Animals, The Kinks. That was the British Invasion. Not many German bands in there, that happened in the '80's with Scorpion I guess.
Can't think of any French bands except for Air.

First of all I think you mean the 20th century. The 19th century is 1800 to1899 rock and roll did not exist. That being said The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are the two biggest. Lets not forget The Who, The Kinks, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and needless to say ABBA from Sweden. Don't much care for ABBA personally but they were very big in the 70's during the disco era and made a significant impact. By the way the first guy mentions Paul Revere and the Raiders this is WRONG!! they were NOT from Europe. They were a U.S. group(hence the name) they copied the British style of the mid 60's There are hundreds more lesser groups most of whom came from Britain.
But without a doubt the biggest impact came from The Beatles. They were the first European group to make it in the U.S. until then Elvis ruled as King. The Beatles broke all records in sales and attendance at concerts. As George Harrison said in one of his later songs "and we did it all" THEY SURE DID! They changed the way rock and roll was and is to this day.
That is why to this day groups are ALWAYS compared to them.
From this you would think I was a big Beatles fan. I like them but I am not a BIG fan. But to deny their impact on American society would be stupid.

19th century or 20th century. I don't believe their were rock and roll bands in the 19th century or 1800's. But for the 20th century or 1900's I would say The Beatles.

Rock and roll occured after the 19th century.

In the mid 1900's the Beatles and the Stones were inarguably the most influential. But let's not forget Paul Revere and the Raiders.

The 19th century? What are you talking about?!
THE BEATLES RULE!!! Of course, there are good songs by other European bands from the British Invasion. Still . . . The Beatles were THE best.
