Many things can cause a person to not have a period. Some common ones are if you are underweight or overweight, have an infection, or disorder. Normally a period should be regular by two years after the start of the first cycle. A doctors visit could help and it is likely you would be put on birth control to start it. It is unsafe to go years without a period as precancerious cells can grow, however this takes quite a bit of time. It is doubtful you have cancer of the ovaries or cervix as these normally affect women later in life, but it is still good to have it checked out by an OB.

It could be a couple of things.

1. you could have extremely elevated prolactin levels which will slow or stop your period completely.

2. This one sounds weird but it has happened. Your hymen could be large or thicker than normal and almost completely bock of any possibility of having a period. my wife went something like 24 years only having 3 or 4 periods ever.

Both of these things happened to my wife. Before we were married she had to have a hymenectomy (a minor surgery where they cut away some of the hymen). And when we wanted to get pregnant she had to go on some medication that would allow her hormones to lower. After all this we have been blessed by a beautiful healthy daughter. Some people think that all this is great as you cannot have a period or get pregnant. However this is a condition that you absolutely need to see a doctor about. It can be easily fixed and well worth going to see the doc. I say the sooner the better.

Best of luck to you !!

Ok, first off try not to freak out.

Our bodies are very complex, and as you can see by the answers, there are MANY factors that could be causeing this.
Weight, Exercise, if either is extreme it could be the cause.

Dont let your mind take you to the worse case senerio.
That is why you MUST go to the doc. so you dont worry yourself to death about it.

People stay away from the doc sometimes
(im guess this is you and your moms reason) out of fear.

But do you know VERY little of what we fear ever actually happens.

I know its not so swell having a doc probe around in you- but this is YOUR body. This is the only one you will ever get. You must take care of it. REGULAR visits to the gyno have saved countless lives- we have greatly advanced medically, chances are you, and your someday child will make it to 100.

I had a very good friend whos dr told her she would never have a baby- her baby is now 5 yrs. If believe in God, - Hes the final say on who comes into this world.

Go to the doc- then get yourself a much deserved ice cream sundae, with extra whip cream:)

Peace out chicky- you'll be fine.

You NEED to see a doctor to find out why this is happening. Granted, there are serious problems that can cause this which I see people before me have listed. But it could just be that your body has not settled into a "cycle" yet. Stress can cause you not to have a period. Also, if you are extremely athletic you may not have a period. I didn't have one for 2 years (other than occasional spotting) when I was regularly working out in high school for sports.

Calm down and insist that your mother take you to the doctor. Or, you can take yourself. Because this has to do with your reproductive system, you can seek treatment for yourself even though you are under 18.

Please call your doctor. If your mother won't, then you need to.

Are you overweight? When i was a bit overweight in high school my periods stopped, but then when i lost the weight and detoxed my body the periods returned! Esepcially since you say you are eating a lot of salty and sweet foods! I would go to the doctor because you could have a hormonal imbalance due to your weight or even if you are at a normal weight, the foods you eat could be playing havoc with your body and hormones! Check that out, because you could also have Polystic Ovaries (dont fret, its not bad if you get treatment for it) but i wouuld defnitely advise going to the doctor! Im sure its not cancer :)

To repeat and reinforce what has been said--there are many reasons that your period has not come and has been irregular before. This forum is not the proper place for free medical advice. Wherever you are living, there are "free" clinics, doctors offices, and Planned Parenthood clinics that can start you moving in the right direction. At a place like Planned Parenthood (plannedparenthood.org), you do not need a parent's consent to be checked for pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases (if you need a "cover story").
The most important thing is to GO and seek medical attention.

Go to the doctor and get put on birth control it will make you regular and you should not have any problems. IF you are athletic that might be why most of the time when girls start their periods and they are athletic they skip months at a time but you are old enough you should and leveled out. See a doctor. Good Luck

Hi there,

Please go and see the doctor. It is probaby nothing as serious as cancer but rather just something hormonal. It can be fixed with a few medications. If your mom does not take you to a doctor maybe you can get an appointment yourself and go and see a gynaecologist. Also take care of your weight. You should not be underweight or overweight.

Please do visit the doctor.

If your Mother will not take you to a doctor, go to a free clinic and explain your problem, I do not think stress or weight would cause you to go this long without a period. I think you need medical help, and soon, not later. Call the hospital and tell them you wish to ask a medical question, they should connect you to a nurse or doctor that will advise you.

You need to go the drs and have a physcial from an ob/gyn.. that's there speciality.

It is not unheard of not getting your period at your age, it can do with diet, weight loss, weight gain etc.

I have pcos which is a ovary that has cyst on it.. This makes me not get my period. and lead to other disease.

Here go to the link with your mom and read this on menstration. It might give you a better view of going to drs.

It scary for the first time going but not knowing what's is going on with your body is more scaryer than not knowing at all.
