I’m just curios. If a person is overweight edging on obesity would it be absolutely necessary to lose weight. How big of a factor is pre-pregnancy weight during a pregnancy?

well my wife is over weight and it was recommended that she try to loose weight before hand for a variety of reason. One being over weight makes it a little harder to get pregnant
Two you gain weight while pregnant and it could put to much of a strain on your heart and on the baby. Also if you don't have high blood pressure or diabetes you may end up with it. You may end up with it anyway but you lower your chances
Third women who are obese have a higher chance of having a c section. Doctors don't know exactly why but they just do.

Wife lost 24 pounds before trying doctor wanted her to loose alto more we did not want to wait that long. She was really careful during pregnancy she ate but she got a pregnancy yoga video and some other pregnancy work out stuff. She only gained 19 pounds during pregnancy. Towards the end she was not able to do them anymore.
So in short/review it is important to loose weight but your world won't come to an end
i almost forgot being obese also puts a woman at a higher risk for premature labor

Everything is a guideline your friend might want to loose weight for a year or something but she should do it healthy. I won't say on this public of a forum how heavy my wife was but like I said she lost some weight but was still considered obese. We had a happy full term baby girl but we did end up with a C section because of failure to progressed

Most overweight people only gain 15 lbs during pregnancy up to 25, mostly a lot less than a normal person. It is fine and no problem to have a baby at 300lbs. She is at risk for gestational diabetes, though. But if she eats small, really well balanced meals throughout the day she will be fine. Lots of overweight people have healthy babies, healthy pregnancies. If she waits to lose weight, she may never have a baby and she'd put it back on anyway.

She can have the baby now, take the weight off after the baby (although that can be hard with having to find time, babysitters or energy..lol).

Also make sure she doesn't have a thyroid problem making her overweight, she would need to get that resolved before getting pregnant or diabetic.

I am obese and I have 4 children. I am not sure why pregnancy makes me put on weight but it does. I started out a size 12(australian) and when I had my first baby I was a size 18 and then it just snowballed. My youngest is gonna turn 6 next month and I was huge when I was pregnant with her and it was so uncomfortable. I never have had a problem conceiving but towards the end I just wanted to reach in and rip out the baby. But then I have felt that way with all my children at the end of the pregnancy lol. It is alright to have a little weight on I don't think it will make you feel terribly uncomfortable but when you get to the point that I am at then it is unadviseable. Good luck with it, I am sure you will be fine.

I would assume it would be more difficult to become pregnant if you were almost obese? Doesnt it affect your mestrual cycle in the same way that being underweight would? I am not sure about this as I have never been pregnant, but if you feel unhealthy, i would lose weight before getting pregnant before adding any more pounds to your body since you will probably putt pressure on your joints etc....

It's always best to have a healthy body before pregnancy. Being obese is very unhealthy before or even after pregnancy.

That said, how is an obese parent going to run and play with an active toddler? There are health risks since there is alot of strain on the heart as well.

Well I've read that it is a good idea to lose weight to conceive but then I see my cousin who is 260 pounds and got pregnant. So it is really hard to say. I think that it would be a good idea to do so to help increase your chances because you never know. I've lost 24 pounds and I am ten pounds heavier than you. I've been ttc for 23 months now. Tons of baby dust to you and I wish you nothing but the best.

I was a little over 200lbs when I gave birth to my son and I am only 5'. He was 7lbs, 9oz 21 1/2 inches long...born on his due date and as healthy as could be. I had a great pregnancy with no sickness and no pains or complications. I am sure it is healthier for you to be in better shape, but I am convinced that the baby is fine either way as long as you eat right and get some moderate exercise.

its best to lose weight before hand, i didn;t and although I don;t look it I am medically considered obese. It has never messed with my cycles or my pregnancies. However I wish that i had been at least 20 lbs lighter before I got pregnant, for purely selfish reasons.

Factor in what, childbirth or personal health? - All I can say is that my ex-wife was seriously overweight before getting pregnant with our second child.

After that, she could not lose weight if her life depended on it. Which it will, eventually.

I was told with my first pregnancy that the fact that I was obese had a lot to do with my son being premature... my sister was obese with her second child and was diabetic thru her pregnancy so i am sure there are lots of concerns for being overweight and pregnant.. it is not healthy for anyone including the baby!
