I don't really think he was fired for poor playoff performance, he had lost the respect of his players and management, two things a manager must have.
The fact the team did not show up for the tigers series is indicative of that.
In this situation, the manager basically has to go for the good of the team and the organisation, its not always a slight on the manager.

Macha was a moron..... he had lost respect of his entire team, would not talk to his players and publicly picked on his injured players..... he made bad moves in the playoffs (starting Loaiza at home for game 2 against Detroit when Haren had a much better record at home).
He and Billy Beane (GM) did not get along and Beane is the person running the A's.........
