Cocktail / Evening dresses. I have been on cruises before. Some ladies wear a fancy sundress with sparkly jewelry, some dress to the nines. some are in between with the infamous "little black dress". My recomendation is to find a glittery evening gown meaning full length, and dress to the nines. You have many opportunities to have your photo taken by the ships photographers on the formal nights. They come to your dinner table and there are a few spots around the ship with different backdrops. But get in line early for your photos. They can get long at times. Have fun and dress up!!

I went on a cruise and didn't take any formal wear. They have one night, the "captains night" where you need formal wear to be allowed into formal dining room. I created a ruckus when they didn't let me in, and we finally went around and entered through the back door. I'm surprised they didn't kick me out and make me walk the gangplank!! They served us anyway, but everyone else was in formal wear. Other than this one and very few other times (if at all), there is no other opportunity for formal, as every one is dressed very casual. I am talking about a tropical carribean cruise here. Have fun.

Consider formal wear the opportunity to dress up in something glamourous. In most black tie occasions, it is considered ill-mannered to dress informally in sportwear. It can be fun to dress formally and it is somewhat uplifting. It is an opportunity to feel opulent. Men are generally handsome in a tux or fine suit, woman in a satin gown or designer fashion are gorgeous. Ty it and have some fun. Check around for a dress...it doesn't have to bizarre or real expensive.
Frankly, I have been on cruises at formal dinners and find men in sport coats and women in dresses I would consider sportwear nobody is asked to leave because of it. I don;t think it really spoils anything to dress down, but why attend if you do? You would probable enjoy a burger and beer on the lido deck instead of a fine wine and a fine pate'.
A cruise is a bit of a glamorous event itself if you want it to be...you have the ability to do things and try things you don;t normally do...why not experience it?

First is that you have to be comfortable with what you wear... you might wear a very flashy gown but might end up uncomfortable. Very uncomfortable that you might even get sea-sick when the ship starts to move.
You very well can identify types of clothes i.e. Sunday clothes, semi formal etc. Play it by how you feel. Dress elegantly. Its not the cost of the clothes but how you carry yourself wearing the clothes you chose to wear. Have a nice cruise. Enjoy!

the difference between the semi-formal and formal is this: if it is a black tie type of party then your best bet is to be formally clothed for this occasion. i:e a long gown type dress.
if it is calling for a casual to semi formal , then you would be best to dress in a nice outfit that is comfortable(casual) or a nice dress /outfit thereof for the semi formal .the type of party usually will depend upon the type of dress required.

Wear something that would be equivelent to a men's tuxedo. I always think 'If i had a picture taken next to a guy in a tux...would I look under-dressed?" The reason I say this is because women often get away with dressing down/ being underdressed because our rules aren't as cut and dry as it is for the guys. I would say on a cruise it would be a floor length dress out of a luxury material (think shiny, like satin, silk, etc). That would be equivenlent to a men's tuxedo.
