I think you actually already know the answer to that question. Also you could unplug the electric clock at night, that would save some more energy.

Here's the thing; most people work well remembering their car keys but if you are the forgetful type leave your fridge running so that you don't forget to turn it back on. One thing I do know i s that a fridge heats up while it is off because there is no circulation of air (like your car in the summer) your freezer will fare better because frozen food takes longer to warm up.
So, if you really want something else to do; go ahead and unplug it, but constantly changing the temperature IS a playground for germs that love to live in temps above 40 degrees.
And an unplugged fridge can reach temps of 85 to 100 or more degrees. And it really doesn't take that long for food to become deadly.

No, there's nothing wrong with this. I knew someone who had a timer to shut off the refrigerator every night. Ice cream gets a bit soft. It doesn't hurt the refrigerator and you won't get food poisoning. I don't know how much power you'd save, but it will take less power to bring the temp down in the morning than to keep it down all night. Same thing with air conditioning and heat, it does save energy to turn it off when not in use.
Notice the interesting misconceptions here. On the one hand, it won't help because modern refrigerators are so well insulated, but in the same breath they declare it will warm up enough overnight to give you food poisoning. I have a plastic food chest that will keep things cold overnight! A little reason, please.
It won't harm the coils, the compressor, the food or anything else. People do more harm by turning off/unplugging a running refrigerator and starting it again right away. Leave it off for a few minutes to let the refrigerant pressure equalize before restarting to avoid putting a load on the compressor.

refridgerators are built to run continuously. The amount of energy you save is minimal. Probably costs you less than $5 a month. Yes it is bad for the fridge to turn it off every night.

Yes it is, it can cause the freezer coils to ice up blocking air flow to the fresh food, new refigerators today use less electric & are better insulated, not opening the refrig. doors at night saves alot of energy.keeping the condenser coils clean saves a bunch too!

yes, plus it doesnt conserve power. It actually uses more by unplugging it at nights because then it has to work harder to bring the temperature back to where it should be.
