i have a toshiba m105-s3074 laptop and on the front it has a switch to turn wireless on and off and next to it there is a semi-see through piece of plastic and it says Infrered on it, my cell phone is also infrared, but when i enable it on my phone and point it at the IR receptor nothing happens, do i have to enable something on my laptop or download something or what?

you might have to enable it in the BIOS and are you sure your phone is infrared? read the manuals

It's not clear that your phone speaks the same protocol as the computer. Another computer or a PDA might be able to talk, although in my experience most people keep the IR turned off.

check in your device manager if your infrared device in laptop is really installed properly. if it's not, you should see a question mark beside your infrared device. if that's the case, reinstall the driver. you can also check if the infrared of you celphone is activated before you point it to the IR of you pc, else your pc won't really recognize your phone.
