I'll give you a hint, it's not because the liberals blah blah blah, and it's not because the conservatives blah blah blah. If you're asked why our country has so many problems, and the first thing that pops into your head is that it's the other team's fault, you need to put on the pointy hat and sit in the corner until you're ready to rejoin society. And if you're going to answer that it's the gays or the immigrants, just stop and think that if there's some way to contact the mothership, or if there's some ritual you can perform, go ahead and do it, and get back to your home planet/dimension.
I know this is a pretty stupid question, but if we can get just a couple halfway intelligent answers, by the time I get around to picking the "best" one, then maybe I'll be able to decide what my next question will be, a) so, how do we fix it? or b) what's the fastest way to kill myself?

motorcycletc...I don't expect our system to be perfect, just better.
The whole point of the Constitution is that no person or government is perfect, and I'm not looking for unified field theory of crummy governments, just some thoughtful ideas about why we spend most of our time flicking boogers at each other like school children, instead of trying to make things better.
I doubt there's much we can do about people in both parties who vote by faith alone, but I'd like to know if anyone can come up with something concrete...

Plus, when we have an election, and our choice is between Bush and Kerry, what good is being informed going to do?

You make some good points.
BUT, the real problem is that our political system is controlled by the ones with the most money.
Clean up the money issues, and our political system will be a lot better.

No human system is perfect, because humans aren’t perfect. But------there is not a single government anywhere in the world better than ours. Do you want to live in Iran? So the real question is: why is everyone demanding that our system be perfect when it is already the best? Let me just ask, that if you don’t like what is wrong with our system, are you an informed voter? And by informed I don’t mean only listening to mainstream media. Anyone with half a brain can see that they are liberally biased. AND so are the “conservative” media outlets. Unfortunately, the only way you can get “balanced” news is to watch both and decide for yourself. Anyway, the point is, if you are only griping about the system, then you are part of the problem and not part of the solution. Please get informed (unbiasedly) and vote.

A good starting point would be to make the government afraid of the people instead of the people being afraid of there own government .
Naturally, the common people don't want war ... but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

Currently in Washington there is no check and balances. Bush has been able to complete his agenda without debate. It helps to have a dialog so we can compromise and improve america. There are too many extreme left and right politicians and america really needs more moderate independent options so we can weed out the bad the ones and progress as a nation.

Campaign finance and legislative riders are the main reason... Something has to be done to cut the ties that huge multinational corporations have on our politicians... that plus many politicians on both sides have been corporate lobbyist's, corporate lawyers, ceo's etc, they have worked against people and have no morals.. they are easily bought.

If anyone knew what was wrong then we could fix it, great question though, too bad no one has a real answer. The fastest way to kill yourself would be...uhhhhh....global warming..lol...j/k...I know that will get some people going. But to answer your question, I think all Americans liberals and conservatives need to unite and get along, for a start.....
