We have a laptop running Windows XP, for some unknown reason the sound does not work. The speaker icon located in the toolbar is now missing. When I went to control panel and selected sound control the adjustment options were not activated (they would not allow me to make adjustments). Nothing is pluged in to the speaker jacks. Earthlink DSL was installed and the sound problem resulted after that. What should we do?

delete your sound drivers and reboot. XP should find new hardware and make them work. Make sure you have the volume up!

I had a similar problem, took it back and the guys at CompUsa didn't fix it. I had to live with this solution. I restart the computer, and then wait for a beep when my password blank appears. If it doesn't beep, i restart it. It usually works half the time.

You may find your solution to be here.

Start - Control Panel - Sound and audio Devices. That may help you figure out your problem.
