So length is 12 feet, width is 12 feet, height is 2 inches. That does not make 288 of ANYTHING.
When we express this as length is 12 feet, width is 12 feet, height is 1/6 foot, we can multiply them to get cubic feet. The arithmetic is 12 * 12 * 1/6 = 24 cubic feet. You have to be able to do arithmetic with the fraction along with the whole numbers.

There are none because" sq. feet" is a two dimensional entity.
Four hours later: volume=12*12*(2/12) cubic feet=24 cubic feet.

That's a silly question considering 288 square feet is dealing with a flat surface while cubic feet deals with three dimensions. Give a height (like feet to the ceiling) and maybe I can calculate something.

There is no universally agreed symbol but the following are used:
cubic feet, cubic foot, cubic ft
A standard cubic foot is sometimes but not always a cubic foot of volume at 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 14.7 pounds per square inch (PSI) of pressure. The standard cubic foot is used to measure quantities of gas.
1 cubic foot/feet is equivalent to:
> 1728 cubic inches
> ≈ 0.037037 cubic yards (exactly: 1/27)
> ≈ 0.803563913 U.S. bushels
> 7.48051948051948 U.S. liquid gallons (exactly: 1728/231)
> ≈ 0.178107606679 crude barrels
> 28.316846592 litres
> 0.028316846592 cubic metres
There is no universally agreed symbol but the following are used:
square feet, square foot, square ft
A symbol for square foot, square feet, and “per square foot” commonly used in architecture, real estate and interior space plans is a simple square with a slash through it. It is also occasionally written as a square with a vertical line bisecting it.
1 square foot is equivalent to:
> 144 square inches
> ≈0.111 square yards
> 0.01 "squares". (A square is a unit used in Australia before metrication (and since) to measure the floor area of a house. 1 "square" = 100 sq. ft.)
> ≈0.00002295684 acres
> 92 903.04 square millimetres
> 929.0304 square centimetres
> 0.09290304 square metres
> 0.000000092903040 square kilometres
So there is no connection between the two. I guess you need to reframe your question.

This makes no sense. Square feet are a measure of area. Cubic feet are a measure of volume.

The second poster explained it perfectly. However you say you want your mulch only 1 1/4 inches deep. This is not nearly deep enough if you are doing a landscape bed. I would recommend at least 3"....more is better.

you can't have cubic feet in square feet, because cubic feet is feetxfeetxfeet, while square feet are feetxfeet, therefore are not like terms and cannot be added or subtracted from eachother...

Cubic feet are three dimentional, square feet are two dimentional. So you can't really convert from cubic to square or visa versa.
