Keating, Paul,

in full PAUL JOHN KEATING (b. Jan. 18, 1944, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia), politician who was leader of the Australian Labor Party and prime minister of Australia from December 1991 to March 1996.

Growing up in working-class Bankstown, a suburb of Sydney, Keating left school at age 14 and, among other things, managed a 1960s rock band. He became involved in trade union activity, drifted into labour politics, and was elected in 1969 to the House of Representatives at age 25. Acquiring a reputation for sparkling political invective and party loyalty, he was chosen by Prime Minister Robert Hawke to be federal treasurer in 1983. Keating became a stellar performer, making his mark with a blend of earthy attacks on his opponents and high-level explanations and lectures on the more arcane aspects of economics.

On Dec. 19, 1991, in the midst of a severe national recession, Hawke resigned, and Keating, his designated successor, at 47 became the youngest prime minister in Australia's history. He soon inaugurated financial programs aimed at national recovery. Keating was reelected prime minister in 1993 as the economy regained strength, but his government was defeated by a coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party in the elections of March 2, 1996, which ended 13 years of rule by the Australian Labor Party.
