this can have several meanings
there are occasions where people have had cause to laugh at funerals , or when something really bad happens in life like someones dying or sod's law really strikes.
have you ever laughed so hard that your sides hurt, you cry, you can't stand up and you can feel your stomach muscles cramping up? whatever you did that made you do that was painfully funny.
have you ever laughed but at the same time tried to hold back a fart, a #2 or some other bodily excretion? the impetus for that too could be described as painfully funny.
i've seen some painfully funny tv shows or cartoons myself but usually it's sitautions find myself in with friends or family.

That means it's funny but it is true or ironic. For instance, if you've always bragged about how you will never lose your hair and one day you looked into the mirror only to see a shiny cue ball where your head used to be, if you have a sense of humor, you might look and chuckle realizing you indeed DID lose your hair...funny but painfully true.

Things are painfully funny when they would cause you or the person you're laughing at a level of discomfort ranging from an absurd pang (Oh my God, I'm like that! I'm such a dork!) to a sharp, deep pang, like a struck nerve.

Something that is awful and funny at the same time. Sort of like the Three Stooges, or seeing someone slip on ice. When you don't know whether to cringe or laugh, and you end up laughing your butt off and then feel guilty about it.

Iit means that something is so funny you can't stop laughing.. Like that happens to me a lot when i'm tired... I'll start laughing so hard and i can't stop.. And that usually hurts when it happens.
