whats the difference between a 1gig single channel memory and a 1gig dual channel setup?

A 1 gig dual is a set of 2 512MB memories and a 1gig single is just a single memory. I have heard that the dual is better because it balances the system, but if you plan on expanding to 2gig, then you should get the single so that you can have a dual 2gig.

Well dual channel mode runs faster since it shares the load between two sticks, I could get really technical but that is the simple of it. You need two identical sticks to run dual channel, so you would need two 512s to run 1GB in dual channel.
