What type of design work you are after will define the types of software you will need to focus on - ie, raster(pixel)-based (can't go past photoshop there), vector (Xara, Illustrator), CAD design (not so sure on that one - quite a few around), or web-based design (Would recommend making yourself familiar with both Photoshop & Fireworks for that, as well as of course either Dreamweaver or Go Live), or Graphic Design (and In Design or Quark to your list).
Best advice - chose your direction and make yourself familiar with the software for that field. Get something on paper to show a genuine interest and a willingness to learn. We are moving to an age where the software you can use if often as important as the skill you possess, so find out what software is most used/recommended in your field of interest.
Hope that helps :)

Solidworks is a good package, easy to learn, affordable and you can even get a Personal Edition copy to use free for 90 days. I don't know where you live but if you go to Solidworks.com you can locate a reseller in your area, to get a copy.
Now I said that thinking that you are in the market for Design Engineering, i suppose it would depend on what discipline of design you are interested in pursuing. Mechanical stuff.. Solidworks... industrial design? Alias, Rhino, 3d Studio Max...
AutoCad used to be the tool of choice, but its a 2d tool with drastically shrinking market share in a 3d world. Everyone wants parametric solids nowadays. Solidworks is very easy to learn, and is more widely used that any of the autodesk products in mechanical design. If you go to google and do a search to see who's looking for design talent, you'll see the numbers of solidworks designers far outweigh the number of any other. Want a job? Learn Solidworks
Hope that helps

I suppose it depends upon what sort of design. For much designing, AUTOCAD is pretty standard.
