I don't know about virus protection, but you can get free protection against spyware that tracks which websites you visit. Try Ad Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.
They both offer free downloads from the web.

There are several good Antivirus Prgrams, but I recommend you Norton Antivirus (Internet Security) & Panda (Platinum), I have used them on my PC, and I must say they work well, and you can surf on the internet in a safer way. Also, you must consider not to use P2P Programs a lot as they are an open door to the potential threats because you are making a direct connection to the user not to the site, so there is a high risk to meet a hacker or something like that. Ad-aware is another useful tool you can use to protect your PC.

AVG Free edition is easy, updates and checks itself daily, and watches your e-mail. I've been using it for 7 years, and even installed it on my mom's PC. I saw the link in another answer... GET IT!

AVG free version. I've been using it for a couple of years. I've put it on all the Church computers, as well as all my customers. I've been doing PC tech service for a number of years.
