Learning completely on your own will be nearly impossible. You need feedback. Go to classes or find a private instructor. However, if you want to get a lot of info and see how far can you go with it - you can check your local library for the videos. If nothing there - good trusted video store is here www.dancesport.uk.com and www.dancevision.com and www.danceshopper.com. Just pick what you like from there, they have good quality instructional videos.

This website has demonstration of some basic steps: www.ballroomdancers.com

There is a book with steps, but it is impossible to learn from. It can only be used as a reference or memory refresher. I believe it is called "ISDT syllabus. Standard" It's a grey thin soft cover book

Videos are ok to pick up the basics.
However for a more refined tango dancing you would need an instructor to correct you.
But if your partner is an experienced tango dancer then that would probably do.

Good luck learning on your own. The redhead's a tango instructor, and I go to some of the milangos with her. I gave up on asking her to teach me...I'd trip over myself and hurt someone.
