It only has one layer of squamous epithelial cell which means it i very thin and since gases can only pass through very thin membranes, alveoli are the ideal site for gas exchange.

it hasfour characteristics that make it good for gas exchange 1 it is moist 2 it is thin 3 it is close to an efficient transport system 4 it has a good supply of oxygen
