Due to the Primo-geniture statute in England the wealth of families was inherited by the oldest son only and the second sons and all other prodegy were left without money. the new world gave many second sons, and others, the opportunity to be prosperous.

The Puritans went there (actually were the original European settlers in New England) to escape religious intolerance in England (understandable to me considering how grim and intolerant themselves that the Puritans were), and to have their own little sheltered Puritan outpost in the wilderness far from people and belief/thought systems different than their own. They had to deal with the Indians and I guess eventually turned against them, considering them savage heathens.
