Companion: A person who accompanies or associates with another; comrade ,a person employed to assist,live with or travel with another. Fellowship.
After coming home to the same person for 39 years ,you realize the real reason for coming home to your husband or wife. He or she becomes your companion and without either one there is a void. I miss that women meeting me at the door when I get home .An illness took her away from me. So the answer to your question is companionship. It is a part of life.
