The day you get your period is the first day of your cycle, day 1. You can do it any way that works for you. Throughout the past 28 years I have had my period, sometimes I have kept a calendar in the bathroom, sometimes in my purse, sometimes in my room, on my cell phone calendar... currently I keep a record in Yahoo Notes (ha ha)! It's whatever is easiest.
