most of the time i get it from other people. sometimes i try to guess what their "real" life is like. and the what if's. also i looooove listening to other people's phone calls. since you only get half the story i try to see what the question, or the response was, why they sound so upset, and stuff like that......
also, i have to give credit to my fiancee who's always asking me weird questions.... and make me think about even weirder stuff...

Herman Wouk ... The Winds of War, The Caine Mutiny. His books are an ideal primer for those wishing to learn to write well; he is the best at crafting characters. I have found, though, that he has a problem tying everything together at the end of the book.
Mark Twain ... The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Tom Sawyer especially taught me I can write saleable literature by writing certain works as I think and talk.

Might sound cheesey, but what sometimes gets me in a creative mood is celtic music in a dark room, alone, and everything else silent. Or sometimes really suspenseful, romantic, adventurous ideas will just pop in my head after watching a movie or something.
