I plan on travel to Manila, Philippines, over the Christmas/New Year Holidays. I plan on taking my notebook computer, and will will probably use dial-up, or WiFi if I'm lucky. My question: Is it more reasonable to buy a 'card' there, for paid internet time. Last time I was there I paid for a subscription to a world-wide ISP, and it was awful expensive.

No to Sat. internet. Will be worse. If you want real good best be in Manila or maybe Cebu City. But if don't want to I'd suggest move somewhere with PLDT. Globe, smart, cable companies and so forth all fairly crap and unreliable. PLDT is the best I've had so far and have tried many. Its not like back home, if you want good internet you need to move to a place that has it. The Philippine standard for internet is oversell your service 1,000x more then you can handle. Filipino's won't complain and huge profit margins. Only one I have seen stand out from that is PLDT, this is why wherever I move I make sure its available first. Best of luck to you, internet here is just one of those problems.

Go to any one of a hundred bars and buy a 100 peso 1 hour card for wireless internet. Most good hotels also have this at a reasonable rate. Bear in mind that an internet cafe costs only 40-70 pesos for an hour.
Suggest the Paco Park Oasis Hotel at Paco near Ermita or the Amazonia Bar on Del Pilar street Ermita. Good hotel, 25 usd a night and their bar at Amazonia is a good place to hang out.
Say hi from me.

If you plan to stay in a hotel, first things first you have to check it out if it has an internet access inside the room and if it is free (i.e. Dusit Nikko Hotel, Shangrila Hotel, Manila Intercon, Renaissance Hotel, Somerset Hotels, City Garden Hotel Makati, it depends if the hotel is a 3 or a 5 star hotel).

ISP Cards here are very cheap, P100 (approximately 20 hours)
(Infocom ISP card, ISP Bonanza card) but you still have to find an internet access even if you have the ISP card. I suggest that before booking a hotel room try to check it out if they facilitate an internet access inside the room hotel then your ISP Card will be used.

oh men just buy cheap yet fast and reliable internet cards like Go, ISP Bonanza, etc.. they cost like P100 or P50 depending on surfing hours.. So that's just like $2.. (US)

If you're into WiFi, go to coffee houses but you'll gonna pay for it. If you want it free, then go to Universities. My school, University of the Philippines-Diliman, offers it free and you dont have to have a valid ID to enter the campus. But you need to have one if you'll enter buildings, like the Main Library, where the signal is very good!
