Congratulations, your yard is in the path for bird migrations and was a
stopover for their journey for wherever they're headed. The first time we
experienced this it was awesome. We get birds of all kinds migrating, if
you have any clothes on your line take them in, they'll poop all over everything.
Sometimes you'll see a dead bird or two, because they might collide with
themselves or stationary objects. We've observed this over the last 12 years
and it it still fascinating every time. It'll happen in the Spring too when they
come back.

Are you talking about redwinged blackbirds? Since this was during (well close to) winter, males tend to flock together and won't show any aggression towards one another (don't know what kind of noise they'd make in this case) - however, in the springtime the males will act extremely aggressive with other males, defending territories for the exclusive rights for mating with females - the noise might have been unrelated altogether however *shrugs*

blackbirds like all birds migrate late in the fall and an old wives tale says that such a gathering warns of cold weather approaching

I seen something like that before where sky was just covered. I was playing baseball and everybody just kind a freaked out. Yea its probably migratory birds gathering. They travel in groups to increase chance of survival or something.

They came for dinner, but you wouldn't lay down in the yard so they could eat you.

Or it could be they were migrating and just happened to stop there for a rest.

A crowd like that is actually called a "murder" of blackbirds. Much like cows are in herds.
