Not enough info. Can we assume this is Mac OS X on both computers? Since Mac OS X is based on the Unix operating system, it has many important security features. One of these features is that when you are connected to a network (another computer), the only folder that can typically appear to any other computer is the Public folder inside your user folder. Any file you want to share must be in that folder. This makes it a bit complicated to share thousands of files. You would need to copy each file to the Public folder. Be very cautious about copying any files from the System folder or the Library folder. These are the basic operating system files and you should not try to copy these or any other files to another computer's System or Library folder. It could disrupt the whole operating system of the other computer.

There are some complicated alternatives to this Public folder dilema but I can't explain them in less than 500 words and they involve changing the security settings of your computer which is a big risk.

After you have copied all the files you want to share into the Public folder, you should configure your two computers for Personal File Sharing. Below is a technical article from Apple that explains how to do this:

I don't have experience on this so this a shot in the dark answer. Since your posting this in Desktops category, I am just wondering if you can connect the target HDD disk to the desktop with the source HDD and download either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the Mac OS to the HD. Do a research on this to see if it is doable.
