depends on the type of tree, really! i've got a maple in my yard that goes from green to yellow to orange to brown and dried up, usually falls once it's the orange color. then turns brown and dries up while on the ground. but every type of tree changes a different patters of colors. that's why the woods in some states is so pretty. even some pine trees turn an orangish yellow color in the fall then the needles fall and regrow back in the spring. it's really pretty when all the birches lose their leaves out in an area where there's all pine and birch all thick and close together. then it's a nice dark green and white. that's waht i have in my back yard. so it all depends on they type of tree...

Do you mean what species changes color first? That depends on where you live and the trees growing there. Your best bet is to keep a phenology for your area's plants: a record for when each tree flowers, leaf's out, leaves change color and when they drop. Don't forget the shrubs, there are many beautiful autumn shrubs.

Did you know leaf change is just the dying of the chlorophyll exposing the underlying colors?
