I have a friend who owes $100k of hospital bills, she had insurance but the insurance will not pay for what they call a non-emergency situation which i disagree, my friend had a cancer, stage 2 so it was treated two-three months of chemo and radiation theraphy. She work and a husband who works and they make around $45k/year. They only have one dependent.

With all that said, is there any way they can get out of debt?
Or is there any way they can get help with that hospital bill that they owe?
What can they do to get help?

The hospital that they owe money to wont cooperate and I guess they want my friend to pay it off right away. My friend cannot do that because most of their pay checks go to their bills also. Medicaid didnt accept my friend's application either. I dont know what else they can do.

Anyone?

Your friend's husband needs to reconsider bankruptcy.

Payment plans are workable only if the hospital agrees, and there is nothing that requires the hospital to agree to a payment plan. If the hospital turns the account over to a collection agency, then they can expect a collection lawsuit right away, followed by garnishment and post-judgment interest. I've seen it happen.

The husband needs to realize that bankruptcy laws were enacted to give people a second chance and to do away with the concept of "Debtor's Prison". It's not about screwing people over and not accepting responsibility. It's about having a decent chance at one day having golden years to enjoy, instead of being elderly and living off cat food with only their social security checks every month.

They need to listen to their lawyer. Wouldn't they listen to their doctor?

She needs to go see a lawyer about bankruptcy. It will ruin her credit for seven years, but it won't be as bad as paying the medical bill for years to some. They will probably discharge the bills. She can do a bankruptcy without her husbands name on anything. See a second lawyer. I am doing the same thing right now. She needs a new lawyer.

I have 2 thoughts:
1 - most hospitals will setup a payment plan....there is usually like a patient liason or representitive who can assist with that process. Ask them to check with the hospital and see if they have a program they can get into to repay.
2 - my dad went through a similar thing - and his insurence did finally pick up the bill. again.....have your friend(s) call the insurence company and ask to talk to a supervisor....or someone in charge and see if something can be changed.
I know I said 2 but here is a third.....the cancer socity may have ideas where to get help....if your friends have this problem 10 to 1 says they are not alone!!!!!! let me know how it goes if you can

Hospitals are flexible if you tell them the situation and they will put you on some kind of payment plan. A lot of times they don't care if you pay 5k or 5$ a month as long as you consistently make payments. If it makes you feel any better when I finish med school I will be about 650k in debt of student loans

Stop...you are getting involved where you cannot do anything.

However your local congressman or state senator can investigate for you....make sure it's where that person lives.

You can make a complaint for investigation of the insurance company with the state attorney general's office.

Your claim seems very valid, and needs intervention with the proper authorities....
My very best wishes and prayers.

Hospitals normally take very small amounts per month. She is very lucky that she was not asked for the money upfront before treatment was given. They should count their blessings.
