Bell-bottomed hiphuggers, and a tie-dyed shirt. Put a Peace medallion on a fat chain, and a cross on another chain, and wear them both over your tie-dye. For true accuracy, include a garland of live flowers. And, be sure to wear a braided headband, or a bandana styled into a headband, tied at the back, if you want a true authentic look. And, oh, yes, put a flower in your hair. If you sport a watch, it should be on a 1.5" or wider leather wrist band.

The movie "Shaft," (besides being a good movie and story) was reflective of social dress of the times, with the distinctive expression of the American black culture, which was also growing out of it's former repression. So, John Shaft, fashionably speaking, was no more likely or unlikely to wear a medallion than any other well-dressed man, black or white. Ya can't stereotype medallions to Shaft, given the era. (But, you CAN say, the character in the movie definitely influenced men of all persuasions to feel free to dress more creatively.)

Unlike today's sloppy look for young men's pants, hippies went for comfort and FIT. (Male and female, we were all proud to flatter and accentuate our figures, with worn-look jeans, with functional comfort: afterall, it was the generation of free love which spawned several sexual revolutions) If you had it, you flaunted it, but with something left to the imagination.

If you DIDN"T have it, you flattered what you DID have, by NOT following the fashion trends. Creatively making a style statement in some other way, that uniquely identified you, was very common. This was highly successful for those who had 'less-than-trendy' bodies or budgets. Again, it was a generation of promoting self-expression, open-mindedness, and above all, Peace. Mostly, women's tops were lacey, gauzey, and had a soft "peasant" look. Men preferred the comfort of colored, tie-dyed, or "statement" shirts professing their political or social stands.

If you were a Hippie, you were somewhat rebellious to the "Status Quo," and very much involved in social change, and to varying degrees, political movements. Fashions of the day reflected many influences of change.

If you really want to know more about the "real" Hippie era and the fashions, spend some time with Google or DogPile searches.

Hip hugger pants skin tight to the knee with a huge bell on the bottom dragging on the floor all ragged with a really wide belt with a flag stitched to the butt and a peasant top that's off the shoulders with no bra on. Leather sandals or moccasins, long straight hair parted in the middle with a beaded headband across the forehead, a peace sign medallion on a leather cord and a braided leather bracelet.

You might be more familiar with flare pants, the same thing as bell bottoms, but any ratty pair of jeans should do. If you are female, you can get away with a peasant skirt.

Make a medallion out of cardboard, tin foil, and yarn or string....custom made!

Look for paisley or tye dye in tops, still popular at thrift stores everywhere. Anything frilly or ethnic in print will do.

Cute site about the '60s
http://www.fiftiesweb.com/fashion/hippie-clothes.htm.

We wore wildly colored bell bottom pants, with Gypsy style tops, moccasins.

Are you referring to the movie,Shaft? He was NOT a hippie!

Peace,
I miss the '60s.

Hippie pants would be narrow in the legs and bell bottomed-preferably striped-in weird ways or tied dyed-tops would be like peasant tops or fringe tops. big sleeves.

You can get away with bootcut jeans for the pants. The top should be free flowing.
