You say the compressor has service ports on the top and bottom. Sounds like a York type of compressor mounted lying down with the service ports on the fitting right on the head of the compressor. If that is the case, they are probably both the same size valve. In that case you would have to know what you are looking for in order to id high and low side valves. If the service ports are mounted in the hoses, away from the compressor they are probably different sizes and the smaller of the two would be the high side, the big one the low side. If this is confusing you you should just take it to a shop. If you are lucky and nothing is really wrong you might be able to scrounge up some 12 oz cans of R-12 at $50.00 or more per can laying around in someones basement or find a shop that still sells it. I have been out of the auto repair for a living business since 2003 but at that time I think I was selling R-12 for around $2.50 an ounce if I could get a 30 lb cylinder. I can only imagine it being harder to come by now. If you can't get it you will be converting to HFC134-A. That will require a complete system overhaul as your 70 Mustang does not have barrier hoses and that will require conversion along with a new drier, expansion valve, evaporator flush, condensor flush and maybe even a new condensor if yours is not big enough to make the 134 work efficiently. New compressor because the chances are a compressor that old will not hold a 134 charge and the front shaft seal is probably already leaking any way. If you go to wal mart and get a do it yourself kit you will most likely be causing youself more problems. Take it to a shop.

You can not service the a/c unless it has already been converted over to freon134A. In 1970 auto a/c used R-12, you can't buy R-12 any more, well you can if you have a licence to buy it but you don't want to pay what it will cost. If by some chance the a/c is working leave it alone, if it is not working you will need to take it to a repair shop to have this done. If it has never been converted over the hose that you buy at the parts store to charge the system will not fit the service valve.

You have R 12 refrigerant more than likely so first off leave it alone. You do not have a hint of what you are doing and you will be workind with high pressures. There is no need to SERVICE an air conditioner. If it doesn"t make cold air, it has a leak and the leak must be taken care of before anything else can be done.
You need more than can be explained on here.

particular will - yet you like greater desirable than the electronics to make it artwork. The '70 Mustang ran a mechanical gas pump, you may positioned in a severe rigidity electric powered pump for the gas injection gadget. The wiring harness from the '01 won't in simple terms slide in, you may get a changed one, or locate somebody who's sturdy with analyzing schematics. the computing device would be finding for O2 sensors, which you in all risk won't have, so which you may re-flash the gadget for 'off street' mode. no longer as undesirable because it sounds nevertheless, the 4.6 cranks out greater capability than extraordinarily much each and all the 1970 V8s (small blocks a minimum of) and is a greater stable consumer friendly capability plant.

check your refrigerant lines, usally your high side is smaller than your suction side. your red hose to the high side and your blue hose to the low side, or if your hoses are the same color your gages tell you which is which. the suction side Gage has a vacuum 0-30 going counter clock wise at the bottom of the same Gage for your low pressure reading.your high pressure Gage reads 0-250,300 or more. please make sure you know what you are doing, because the wrong hose on the wrong fitting will blow your refrigerant can to pieces!!! if you are still not sure please get help with someone that is qualified.
