hard drives always if not mostly come in gb. 1gb = 1,000 mb. 1mb = 1000 kb. think of it like this. a song is generally 4mb(4,000kb). i would recomment getting a 160gb or higher hard drive. Dell is a good brand. intel's core 2 duo is very good. the e6300/e6400 is very cheap and fast. don't listen to that guy that says "1.9ghz or faster." he don't know what he is jabbering about. e6300 only runs ~1.86 and will spank most of the previous cpu's at that stock speed. since windows xp generally take about 200-300 mb of ram, you should get at least 512mb. if you play very graphic games, get 1gb and a good video card. (ati's x1600xt or higher/ nvidia's 7600gt or higher) those two are mainstream cards, but provide very good graphics.
I edited my post like what? 3 times?. that ladie also does not know whta she is talking about. 2.4 is not the normal cpu speed for gaming. there is no such thing as the normal speed. learn you material before you help other people. is that so hard to ask?

I have an Apple "Macbook Black 13.3" laptop. The words in quotes are the actual model name for my machine. Ithas the Intel Core DUO 2.0GHz processors with 2GB of Ram. It cost $1,800 with my discount. If you can afford one of those, get one. Otherwise...

Most people buy a computer from Wal-Mart or something. That typically will suit them. However, if you were to really want a good computer, go to http://www.TigerDirect.com/ and buy a Systemax desktop. Get a machine with at least 250GB of harddrive space and at least 1GB of Ram, preferably TWO. Personally, I would go with any CoreDuo system, but if not, I'd not buy a P4. I'd go Core Duo or AMD.

Video memory is important too. Almost as much as any other key component. Try to get at least 256MB of video ram.

Of course you want the Double Layer DVD burner and other bells and whistles.

You can get what I am talking about for about $1,000 plus the cost for the screen. Right now, you can get a 19" widescreen LCD for less than $300. That's a deal.

I'd plan on spending around $1,300 for something that will not only last, but haul balls to the finish line.

I understand about that other thing you emailed me about. No problem.

Yeah, it's kind of overwhelming if you don't know the terminology, but I learned from reading PC World, CNet.com and Zdnet.com - even just going into a computer store and talking to someone. If you have a Gateway store near you, you should drop in - they're pretty knowledgable without being too pushy. Also, it depends what you want to do with your computer - if you want to use it for gaming, you would need a fast processing speed (2.4 GHz is now the norm...), and a good 3D graphics card with a lot of memory, etc....just keep researching! Good luck! :-)

There is no perfect computer, but overall I'm very pleased with my Dell which I've had for over six months now.

Only problem is, it comes packed with many programs you don't want or need. After I got rid of these, it's much faster and better.

Any of the ones you mentioned are very good, you really can't go very wrong these days. Decide what you want to use you computer the most for, and let them build one 'just for you'.

You can always upgrade it in the future if you need to.

HP is good, to be succesful you want at least a 40 GB Hard Drive and 256 MB of RAM anything higher than those numbers will only do you better. and at least a 1.9 Ghz processor again anything higher will do you better.
