andrew K, you're an idiot, don't answer if you're not going to help. Now for the question. I personally am a fanboy of AMD. The thing is it really comews down to whatyou intend to do. The core 2 Duo is a dual core multipurpose cpu that can pretty much handle anything you throw at it. It is better than the AMD Athlon 64 partially due to the fact of its architecture and that the A64 is only single core. AMD has a dual core series of Atlon's called the X2's. They have been out a little bit longer. If you want what is best and currently available, then Core 2 Duo is the way to go. But, as long as you get an X2 in a socket AM2 from AMD, then you'll be able to upgrade to AMD's answer to Core 2 soon. It's really going to be personal preferrence according to what you do. Either one is really good, but Intel's Core 2 currently has the crown. Both Overclock very well and are rock solid stable.

The AMD fans are going to hate on me.

It's better for a few reasons, but let's just go with INTEL because "It's Newer" since this is all most people will read of what I write.

Look into them. Depending on what you have, what you want, and what your planning to do, you might decide you want something that fits those things for you and it is posible the AMD might fit you better. But the Question was " Which is better?"

(((Hint Hint,.. the Intel is DUAL and there have been things released before that that have been some sort of Dual but they are maybe 1/4th as good. So I figure someone will tell you to get one of those other things some time and if you look into it it will be half, a fourth, or a tenth as good as this Intel your looking into)))
