Compatibility....which means sharing the same values, and wanting the same things in life. It does not mean having the same likes and dislikes.
Communication.....Never stop talking to each other, AND never stop listening too.
Compromise....You have to give a little to get a little.
Trust.....If you don't have it, you might as well be alone.

Working at it together. You both have to put in your 50%. But sometimes the other person won't, for whatever reason. And you may have to pick up their slack for a bit. Trust, and patience and creative ideas to keep the relationship exciting will keep it going forever.
