'Konht Lao'...That means "lao person" in Lao language. My source said that is all that he is aware of. There is a distinction between Hmong, Lao and a Thai person who speaks Lao language -- just saying this as FYI. Hmong are (marginally) similar to Lao but live mostly in the mountainous regions.

Depends on how you look at it. Laos, Thailand, Burma Yunnan in Chinahave many peoples living there. The tribes or ethnic groups are not confined by state borders. They all have their own language, religion customs etc. Vientien, the capital, is small but all kinds of people, who would define themselves differently, live there, including westerners. They like Chinese Yuan, Thai Bhat and us dollars
