Sad but true, there is really not much that you can do about it. I am aware of having cracked ribs, and so I do know first hand what it is like. Your ribs have got to be taped. As for why it hurts, well you have to understand that the ribs are protecting muscles, and vital organs, so there is nothing for you to be alarmed about. Just to be on the safe side, however, I would highly recommend that you see your physician, where, if he had just half a brain, would order at the very least, X-Rays to be done, and if he were even more thorough, then he would order that you go and have an MRI. This would determine completely what extent of the damage that you had.
By the way in my case where I did have cracked ribs, this occured while I was playing baseball, and that while I did make a jumping catch against the wall in center field, I hit the wall with such impact that I ended up being pulled from the game. I was then taken by ambulance to the emergency ward of a nearby hospital, where an MRI was performed. It was determined that I had cracked ribs. At that point my ribs were taped up. I was unable to play for a few weeks because every movement would cause a lot of pain,
As far as taking any pain killers, I would not recommend any at the present time, and the reason for that is because you would only be masking the pain. Once a diagnoses has been made, you can then take a pain killer; one that the doctor would prescribe. In my particular case, about all that I could do to ease the pain is EXTRA-STRENGTH TYLENOL, and the reason for that is because while others may be more effective, there are possible severe side effects, such as being harsh on your stomach, as well as causing you to have high blood pressure. This can be potentially dangerous because having high blood pressure may result in you having a heart attack or a stroke.
Good luck, and follow up on my advice that I've given you.

Chances are good that you did crack one. Probably won't do you any good to get x-rays because there isn't a heck of a lot that can be done for a cracked rib. Don't exert yourself, bath in hot water with epsom salts (helps you relax), don't stretch if you don't have to, and stop touching it.
Pain killers to get back in the game? Are you nuts. The problem with pain killers is that you can play, but won't know if you are hurting yourself, more. The reason we feel pain is so that the brain knows that there is something wrong with the body. If you take pain killers to get back into the game, you are asking for real trouble.

It sounds like a good possibility that they are. The only way to make sure it is to get the x-rays.
You should get x-rays no matter what to make sure you lungs are not punctured. There is really nothing they can do if they are cracked since they cannot cast fractured ribs. They are needed to move to breathe. If you cont. to play, you may further the chance of puncturing a lung if they are fractured. It will be up to your doctor and your coach about how long you will be out of the game. You need to take it easy. Your health is more important than the game. You can be just as good on the sidelines as a moral booster for your team. Best wishes to you.

Jason you should totally get an x-ray, if you have a cracked rib you don't want to make it worst and puncture a lung. One way to check is put your hand on the hurt area and take a few deep breaths. While you are breathing in and out feel for a crackling of the bone this is called crepitus. Even if you don't feel this you may still have a cracked or broken rib.

Well, i really can't conclude if you have cracked ribs, however, your manifestations strongly points out cracked ribs. It hurts when you take a deep breath because of the impingement of nearby tissues. The pain you felt never goes away probably because of the continuous healing of the affected area by virtue of inflammation (when there is inflammation, there is always pain because of the tissue injury). That small spot you can see probably is a blood clot due to a blunt injury from contact sports.
As i have noticed, your manifestations are mostly feelings of pain and discomfort, right? I strongly suggest that you visit your doctor immediately because i think you should undergo a series of diagnostic tests to rule out this thing.

Hi!
The rib(s) need to be xrayed immediately.
Please call your doctor and make an appointment for an xray. You do not want to run the risk of puncturing a lung, so please get and xray and let the doctor decide the best approach. Your options are:
1. Do nothing, suffer, continue playing and cause even more damage to yourself. Rememeber that you have to live your whole life with this injury - foot ball does not last forever.
2. Call your doctor, get an xray and proper treatment. You may have to sit out a game or so, but if you get it treated, you will be able to play sooner.

Yep, sounds likely. I had 8 broken/cracked ribs 8 years ago and it still bothers me. I'd get it X-rayed. There's not much they can do for cracked ribs other than give you painkillers, but you don't want to make it worse by continuing to play. Depending on the severity of the crack/fracture, usually will heal in 6-8 weeks.

yes...ribs move as you breath and as such can hurt that is why they have a soft connection they actually move and contract with lungs awhile helping with support. you also have something called false ribs i believe they are connected by fibro cartilage i don't quite remember but overall yes you could of i do remember that if you breath and it hurts it may be cracked. You could also have bruised a bone yes that can be done but in which case yes get an x-ray to be on the safe side better safe than sorry
