Punishment is when I give my Grandchild a ten minute time out for acting inappropriately. Vengence is when someone keeps bringing up the past and putting it in your face, even if it was 15 years ago, as if I could go back and change the past, when I'm doing much better now. Since they harbor their anger and resentment and can't let it go. It does them more damage than anyone else. Also, vengence is when someone royaly screwed me over financially and I wait a couple of years or so, and get even, since they've done it to others, and they would never know who or what hit them. Only did this one time. I couldn't let it go. Tired of being taken advantage of. Now I'm a lot smarter, and don't allow that to happen in the first place.

Punishment: Justice served for a crime.
Vengance: A bit more personal and isn't always for good.
