I'm having trouble understanding the concept of how some ions have certain charges. All help appreciated!

It's the shortest route to 8 or 0. Group IA is +1 since it is easier to lose 1 electron than to gain 7 electrons. Group VIA is -2 since it is easier to gain 2 electrons than to lose 6 electrons.

The ultimate goal is to get 8 electrons in the outermost energy level.

Column 1 has 1 electron in the outside ring. They would like to give that 1 electron away, in doing so they get a +1 charge.Alkali metals
Column 2 has 2 electrons in the outer ring. They want to get rid of those 2 electrons, so get a +2 charge. Alkaline earth metals
Skipping to column 13 or 3 on the old charts(skip the tranision elements in the middle) Aluminium column give away 3 electrons and get a +3 charge.
Column 4 or 14 like to share electrons.They could give 4 or take 4 but generally dont Carbon family
Column 5 or15 like to take 3 electrons to make their outer ring 8, the stable number. This gives them a -3 charge.Nitrogen family
Column 6 or 16 likes to take 2 electrons to fill the outer ring and becomes a -2 ion.Oxygen family
Column 7 or 17 needs 1 electron to fill the outer ring. In taking 1 electron it gets a -1 charged ion.Halogen family
Column 8 or 18 is the noble or inert gases, which already have a full outer ring so do not form ions.
The transision elements in the center have more than one oxidation state so have more than one type of ion. You have to be told which they want. Usually this is done with a roman numeral in the written name. That gives you the charge on the ion.

The simplest rule is:

Groups 1 to 3: charge = (Group number) positive

Groups 4 - 7: charge = (8 - Group number) negative

The charge goes by column
The first is +1
2nd : +2

Skip the transition metals, they all have individual charges. If you are doing an equation, look the individual charge up or as a general try 2. It seems to always work

3rd : +3

Skip the 4th row too, it's like the transition metals

5th is -3
6th: -2
7th -1
The noble gases are neutral
